Practical Gifts for the Practical Marketing (Geek) Professional

December 7, 2011 by Mana Leave a Comment

practical giftsGift cards, popcorn and cookies are all fair in the business world but for the practical professional, or marketing professional, or entrepreneur, we’d like to recommend a series of gifts that will remind them of you for the rest of next year.

SEOMoz subscription

One of the best DIY SEO platforms, SEOMoz “combines SEO management, social media monitoring, actionable recommendations, and so much more in one easy-to-use platform.” You will do your gift recipient a major favor if you get them this gift. Plus, every time they log in they’ll think of you, and every time they see their numbers go up, they’ll thank you.

Time with a business consultant

This was at the top of my list when someone asked me what I wanted for Christmas. It’s not a $20 gift, but they may love you forever, not just for a year. No matter how well a business is doing it’s always valuable to reset and learn better ways of doing business. Of course, it has to be the right business advisor. I have Brad Farris from Anchor Advisors on my list.

Half a day with a personal organizer

We could all use help getting organized, especially organizing files and receipts, and getting ready for tax season. Getting a personal organizer was one of the best things I ever did. Amy Trager helped me find a smarter filing system, and more importantly, I made time to get organized. If your gift recipient is a personal organizer, give them the opposite, a finger-painting class or some other outlet that will help them take a break from organizing and help them let loose.

A small investment

I am a huge fan of cash gifts. But I understand in the US it’s seen as tacky. So go with a different kind of financial investment – precious metals. For under $50 you can get an ounce of silver and know that it’s the gift that will keep on giving. A trusted source to buy precious metals is AuSecure.com, 1-855-5AUGOLD. What I love about giving out coins is  that they’re just absolutely gorgeous. If you’ve never held mint in your hand, I highly recommend you put that on your bucket list. I don’t know what it is about it, but it’s emotionally powerful. You will make a major impression on the recipient.

I think you get the idea. Make it practical. Avoid the plastics, packaging and sugars. Go with something intangible yet practical. Put some thought into who they are and what they may need or make use of. You’ll find that it’s so much easier to gift something that doesn’t need to be shipped.

What’s your practical gift idea?
