You’d think that with all the publicity Facebook’s gotten lately, it would strive to be on its best platform behavior. Sadly, this isn’t the case. This week, we’ve seen a lot of mysterious Facebook issues happening. A page analytics insights tab has gone missing, the ability to boost posts on another page (except from Business Manager) has been lost, and – as of yesterday – a Facebook bug reportedly caused 14 million users’ private posts to go public.
Facebook Outage in 2020
This was the worst outage they had in over four years. Though Facebook had apologized to its users, the engineering department thoroughly explained the cause of the mishap. It was due to the unfortunate handling of an error condition in an automated system for verifying configuration values.
As every single user all over the world tried to fix the problem, the cluster of databases was filled by lots of queries in a matter of one second which made the databases difficult to recover. They admitted that fixing it was very difficult and taxing and at the moment, they are looking for new designs for this configuration system to avoid problems in the future.
We’ve reached out to Facebook for answers (they do respond, though sometimes the issue resolves itself before they reply). But we wanted to remind you that if you’re seeing something strange on Facebook, you’re not alone! Here a few tips if you encounter a glitch:
-
- Reach out to Facebook’s community: Do a quick search to see if others are experiencing the same problem. Sometimes you can crowdsource answers.
- Ask Facebook directly: You can leave feedback from your pages or from Business Manager… or do both.
- Follow up as many times you need: You know what they say: If at first you don’t succeed, try, try again.
- Ask us!
